Portable Garden For Kids

By George Pool

Your kids would love to have a fun-filled day with a gardening activity that is simple and enjoyable. Although you can let them have their gardening activity on a garden bed, making their portable garden is more interesting and exciting. Portable gardens are easier to maintain and have the benefit of being moved easily whenever required.

You will need some durable buckets or pails that are not too big for your kids to carry to their garden. Choose colorful containers or if possible, let your kids do the decision-making on which color they want for their portable garden. Start with only one bucket or two so that it can be manageable for your little gardener. You can encourage them to paint their buckets to make them look more colorful and attractive. They can also paint their names if they want or write words or name of the plant or flower they are growing in the bucket.

Now that they have their buckets for their portable garden, it’s time to make a drainage system for their container garden by drilling holes at the bottom of their bucket or pail. The number of holes is not important as long as they will meet the purpose although two are enough.

If you are a kid, having your own gardening tool adds up to the coolness of gardening. That’s why it is a good idea to buy kiddy shovels and other necessary gardening tools for your kids. You can always supervise them while they are using these tools to avoid any accidents from happening. Always tell them not to play with the gardening tools as they are dangerous when mishandled.

They can use the tools for digging and putting soil or soilless mix in their buckets as they prepare their portable garden. They should fill at least half of the bucket with soil before they plant their chosen seed or plants. However, they should make their portable garden light so that they can carry it or move it easily whenever they want although this would not be advisable.

Show the kids how you prepare the seeds for planting and teach them how to transplant them when they grow up into young plants. Make sure that you teach them the right way of properly handling and transplanting young plants into their buckets.

Teach them how to properly water their plants and when the right time is to water them. Don’t get shocked if ever you found them playing with the water as most kids love to sprinkle and play with it. Show them how to water the seeds as well as the young plants.

Although using fertilizer is essential for the proper growth of plants, you can always skip this part if you are skeptical of the necessity of this product with your children’s gardening activity. It’s alright to show them how it’s done and let them slowly put fertilizer pellets on their bucket garden as long as you are around to watch over them.
