There is a vast range of opportunities available to a well-qualified graphic design school graduate and the field is expanding constantly, to keep up with the rapidly changing nature of technology and the constant demands of modern marketing techniques. Graphic design is a global art form with employment opportunities that span the contemporary world of art and commerce.

At entry level, positions range from web designer and junior designer, through to pre-press production artist, and although conditions and places of employment may vary a great deal for graphic designers, in the main, they can expect to be steadily employed by large advertising, publishing, or design companies, working regular hours in comfortable, well-lit, creative surroundings. A skilled and experienced designer can quickly progress to a position as an art director, a creative director or a production manager, overseeing endlessly varied and interesting concepts, in a vast array of inspiring industry sectors.

Freelancers and designers working in smaller firms generally work on a contract, or job to job, basis, often adjusting their workday to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and to keep up with agreed deadlines. Self-employed graphic designers and consultants tend to work longer hours and their work environments and conditions may vary a great deal.

According to the United States Department of Labour, employment of graphic design college graduates is expected to grow 13% from 2008 to 2018, as the demand for graphic design continues to increase. So even in uncertain times, the future for graphic designers is extremely optimistic.

Graphic design is such an all-encompassing skill today, its difficult to think of a sector that doesnt employ the services of a qualified individual that has completed a graphic design program, but here are just a few of the most commonly compatible industries for the potential designer hoping for a varied and interesting career:

Fashion designers

Interior designers

The music industry

Floral designers

Computer software engineers and programmers

Self-published authors

Magazine and book publishers

Newspapers

Film-makers and animators

Desktop publishers

Photographers

And potentially any business that requires a website and/or relies on internet media marketing.

The modern world of advertising and marketing is more image-based than ever before, as potential customers become more harassed and time-poor and consumers endeavour to assimilate information much more quickly. We rely increasingly on pictures to deliver a fast and direct message, and wherever theres a picture-based campaign, even one thats based on a fine-arts concept, theres usually a graphic designer somewhere, bringing the entire vision together.
